DESCRIPTION
One of the largest zoos in Romania, both as size as a number of species, some of which are unique in the country. It is the only zoo in Romania which breeds the jaguar, the Siberian tiger and the Emu ostrich, possessing unique species such as the hippo and the Alaska bears (grizzly).
The Calarasi zoo has an impressive number of species of animals, mammals, birds, exotic fish, exotic reptiles, etc.
In the zoo you can admire: lions, Siberian tigers, leopards, jaguars, hippopotamus, Vietnamese dwarf pigs, Alaska bears, Tibetan bears, baboons, deer (carpathian, raccoons, Angora rabbits, squirrels (Degu), guinea pigs, chinchila, white hedgehogs; a large variety of exotic birds, pelicans, swans (white and black), parrots (Nimfa, little and great Alexander, dwarf parrots), peacocks, pheasants (gold, silver), ostrich, (emu, african, nandu), predatory birds (eagle, hawthorn, owl), exotic, decorative, piranha fish; exotic reptiles, snakes, pitons (rock, Burma, Indian, Carpet), boa (Rainbow), royal snake, scales with scales, green Iguana, Nile crocodile, turtles, tarantula, etc.
HISTORY
It was established in 1980 on June 1 and opened its doors under the leadership of Gheorghe Tatavura, who brought some mammal species (wild and domestic) as well as a collection of exotic birds belonging to him.
A difficult period ensued in the winter of 1985, when the Zoo was flooded and 80% of the animals drowned. After 3 years, the Garden entered a period of rebirth, even becoming the first in the country because it had the most animal species.
Since 1990, the Zoo in Călăraşi hosts unique animals in Romania, which was due to the animal exchanges between the Calarasi Zoo and other such locations from abroad. In 10 years, over 60 specimens of Siberian tigers and jaguars were obtained. Some of these tigers came to the Globus Circus where they were trained and participated in the shows.
The Calarasi Zoo can be proud of the fact that over the past few years it has reproduced more than 50 Siberian tigers, the institution representing a space that ensures the perpetuation of the species in captivity - the Bărăgan Nursery.

The Zoo in Calarasi is the only zoo in Romania which breeds the jaguar, the Siberian tiger and the Emu ostrich, possessing unique species such as the hippo and the Alaska bears (grizzly).
The Zoo in Calarasi is an "exporter" for other zoos in Romania. A pair of unique animals in the country are the Alaska (grizzly) bears, over 1.2 tons of weight, which were part of the Nicholas Ceausescu collection, and after 1990 they were granted to Călărasi.

OTHER INFORMATION
The "Aquaterrarium" is the newest building in the Calarasi Zoo, built with the support of the City Hall of Calarasi and Mayor Nicolae Dragu. The aquarium sums up a collection of aquatic animals: exotic fish, exotic reptiles, snakes, crocodiles. A botanical garden is planned to be built inside the Calarasi Zoo.
